The jar of life’s story | How to set your priorities right this year.
How are you doing so far with your resolutions this year? Have you you actually set them?
Just imagine things this 2022 changing with absolute certainty. How would you feel?
Imagine…
- New health habits that actually stick.
- New systems in place to avoid self sabotaging.
- New fitness routines that actually work and accelerate your time and efforts.
Wouldn’t that be great?
It surely would and guess what? If you are making progress on those things congrats!
BUT…
What if it’s not working out the way you hoped?
If that’s the case, worry not, I want to share with you an inspirational little story — The jar of life — that will hopefully help and empower you to put things into perspective and keep you on track going forward this year.
Enjoy your reading!
A professor of philosophy stood before his class with some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks about two inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was full.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly and watched as the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The professor then asked the students again if the jar was full.
They chuckled and agreed that it was indeed full this time.
The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled the remaining open areas of the jar.
“Now,” said the professor, the lesson is
The rocks represent the most important things that have real value — your health (the most important), your family and your closest loved ones. Those things that if everything else (the pebbles and the sand) was lost and only they remained, your life would still have meaning.
The pebbles represent the things in your life that matter, (such as your job, house, hobbies and certain friendships) but that you could live without. They are not critical for you to have a meaningful life. These things often come and go, and are not permanent or essential to your overall well-being.
The sand (and water) represents everything else — the small stuff. Material possessions, chores and filler things such as watching television or browsing social media sites. These things don’t mean much to your life as a whole and are likely only done to get small tasks accomplished or even to fill time.
The metaphor here is that if you start with putting sand into the jar, you will not have room for rocks or pebbles. This holds true with the things you let into your life.
If you spend all of your time on the small and insignificant things, running around like a headless chicken you will run out of room for the things that are actually really important.
Therefore, pay attention to what is critical to your happiness and well-being. YOUR BIG ROCKS. Practice self-care, spend quality time with the people you love and the rest is just pebbles and sand…
For me, finding time in the day for exercising and taking care of our wellbeing should be considered a “priority rock” for us all.
Physiologically, when you move you release endorphins in the body. This natural high has the potential to positively influence our daily interactions by making us feel super better about ourselves and about everything else.
Who wouldn’t want that all the time?
If I could sum up this newsletter in one sentence it would be:
“Make room for what’s seriously important”
And so if you haven’t been hitting your 2022 resolutions for your health, fitness and whatever else is seriously important for you yet, what are you then investing your time on and prioritising first?
